proposal for mixed media artpiece

Title: - (none as of yet)

Description:
I intend to create a physical representation of inner personal struggle within the mind of the present day human being. It will relate to the feelings of stress and regret that is almost constantly felt in our lives. It also hints towards problems with short-term memory, so while being spontanious it is also very 'heavy'. It will mostly relate to myself, as I will be the main source of material and inspiration.

Description of Piece:
The hybrid artwork will consist mainly of a large bulletin board, most likely four feet by five feet. it will be mounted on a wall, the middle of the board at an average eye height. The board will be leaning into the viewer, and have built-on extensions that curve outward towards the viewer, as if it is about to envelope them.
The board will be covered in layers of post-it notes, calendars, and various reminders. The notices will be about various things someone has to do; places to go, things to return, people to call, things they forgot to do. Some of them will relate to each other. The top layer or most obvious reminders represent the most recent, and the ones behind them have faded away in the person’s memory. Strong regrets or reminders will possibly be repeated several times in one spot, taking over the ‘present’ obligations, but every note will be fighting for attention in some way.
Around this piece will be several speakers, roughly the size of a fist, coming from the sides and bottom of the board and dangling slightly towards the floor. Each of the speakers will have a different sound track coming from them. One will be a course of multiple conversations, both happy and sad, casual and serious. One voice is often common in all of them. Another speaker will be playing random sounds and music clips. These would be distractions that are popping into the person’s head. Another speaker will relate to memories of the person, and what they are saying to themselves in their mind. The sound will sometimes be distorted, and occasionally a strong statement will be heard clearly. Such things would be apologies, reminders, laughter, crying, or destructive sounds.

Creative Problem:
People today are always keep saying they never have time to do everything they can. Often true, this is not always the case. Many people are also lazy and forgetful, or scared to do the things they need to do. They can often get wrapped up in their worries and regrets and lose sight of what is currently expected. I want to see how people will be able to relate to this piece, since it is supposed to be something everyone can experience. This is also something that is important for me to create, because it is a very good representation of myself, and I feel that delving into this concept further will allow me to understand myself and my aspirations better. Also, it will probably get me in a rather interesting and disturbing mindset, which will allow me to put forth more meaning and emotion into the work.

Materials:

Bulletin Board 4'x5' Speaker set
300 post-its, various sizes Wire (30 gauge?)
Industrial glue Calendar/Agenda
staples small hooks
nails

Hopefully this will not kill me. =)

This is a really great idea. I think it would be cool if you left some blank post-it notes and some pens lying around so that people could post their own reminders. That way, it would kind of be this ever-progressing piece full of more and more things that people need to do, just like our lives. There's always somewhere to go, someone to see, people to call, and it just never stops.
I also really love the idea of adding distractions to the conversations playing on the speakers. I think a lot of people will relate to that constant sense of interruption.

Good luck!

YEAH SARAHS CMMNT

i'd say start collecting notes n stuff from around your house, and other places you can find. its going to be hard to create all these notes yourself, and to make them look natural.

or start documenting your spontaious thoughts every day. i did this for a while. things like "today is cold.. OH CRAP HAIRCUT TONIGHT" things like that. really write down evertthing your mind is thinking.

Thank you very much for this idea! It crossed my mind before, but ironically enough I forgot about it.
My only worry is that people will only draw cartoons or swear words, which would be hilarious but not that point.
However I will most likely do this anyway. <3

Hilarious cartoons and curses could relate well to the ideas present in this project, could they not? People being able to add their own thoughts (however stupid they may be) could represent the constant flow of new things we have to occupy our ever-cluttered minds.

Interesting idea- I think to make your point you will have to push the idea of the organization board further so that it is not just a board as we know them but with sound. It seems your project may require excessive notes- Costco may be the place to go to get large volumes of stick it notes - get others to help with the large volumes of notes ( give them the peramitters of what you want -- what you dont want and have fill out a pack and give them back to you. When you show this will the post its move off of the board onto the wall all over the objects in the room -chairs - people -- floor so they stick to people. Think about how you could over emphasize the idea of a post it note, reminders, scraps to make your point. If time is a strong variable could that be worked into your idea with sound, projection----------- just to get you thinking.
